Gua Sha is a traditional Asian practice, also known as “scraping”. Using a tool with a smooth edge (like a Chinese soup spoon), a small area of skin is scraped until the blood rises to the surface, but without breaking the skin, resulting in a red or purple mottled area, which fades in 2-3 days. Gua Sha moves chi (see Shiatsu) when it becomes stagnant in an area, often manifested as a stiff or chronically sore muscle area.
